Pierre Mauroy, death of a great French socialist leader

Pierre Mauroy passed away on the last night at 84.

Former François Mitterrand’s PM (1981 to 1984), French Socialist Party First Secretary (1998 to 1992), mayor of Lille (1971 to 2001) then Senator (1992 to 2011), Pierre Mauroy was an authentic, passionate and deep socialist activist and leader, faithful to his social origins (he came from the labour class). He led very important and major reforms as the implementation of retirement from 60 years old, the abolition of death penalty…

Pro-European – he managed to convince François Mitterrand to maintain France within the European Monetary System, prelude to the current Eurozone – and very passionate by Lille, his city, he will be missed a lot. This is a big loss for the French socialists.

A very sad end of week.
